چکیده

Recently, Rogers and Crocker (1) proposed a method to predict the interaction between colloids coated with two kinds of ssDNA, A and B. A key step in ref. 1 was to estimate the average number of DNA bonds, 〈N〉, assuming local chemical equilibrium (LCE) between hybridized and unhybridized sticky end concentrations: hNi 1⁄4 Ð dr CAðrÞCBðrÞ exp1⁄2− βΔG0 ρ0 1⁄4 Ð dr1⁄2CAðrÞ−CABðrÞ 1⁄2CBðrÞ−CABðrÞ exp1⁄2− βΔG0 ρ0 : [1]

Effect of many-body interactions on the solid-liquid phase-behavior of charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions

The solid-liquid phase-diagram of charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions is calculated using a technique that combines a continuous Poisson-Boltzmann description for the microscopic electrolyte ions with a molecular-dynamics simulation for the macroionic colloidal spheres. While correlations between the microions are neglected in this approach, many-body interactions between the colloids are f...

DNA-based soft phases.

This chapter reviews the state-of-the-art in the study of molecular or colloidal systems whose mutual interactions are mediated by DNA molecules. In the last decade, the robust current knowledge of DNA interactions has enabled an impressive growth of self-assembled DNA-based structures that depend crucially on the properties of DNA-DNA interactions. In many cases, structures are built on design...

Using DNA strand displacement to control interactions in DNA-grafted colloids.

Grafting DNA oligonucleotides to colloidal particles leads to specific, reversible interactions between those particles. However, the interaction strength varies steeply and monotonically with temperature, hindering the use of DNA-mediated interactions in self-assembly. We show how the dependence on temperature can be modified in a controlled way by incorporating DNA strand-displacement reactio...

Effective pair interactions between colloidal particles at a nematic - isotropic interface

– The Landau-de Gennes free energy is used to study theoretically the interaction of parallel cylindrical colloidal particles trapped at a nematic-isotropic interface. We find that the effective interaction potential is non-monotonic. The corresponding force-distance curves exhibit jumps and hysteresis upon approach/separation due to the creation/annihilation of topological defects. Minimizatio...

Entropic Colloidal Interactions in Concentrated DNA Solutions

We explore the entropic interactions between a pair of micron-sized colloidal spheres in DNA solutions. By confining the particles in a line-scanned optical tweezer, we directly measured the functional form of the interaction potential with sub-kBT resolution in samples where the spheres and the polymer coils were of comparable size. The potential is well described by the Asakura-Oosawa depleti...
